Handling of the H1N1 pandemic: PACE calls for safeguards against 'undue influence by vested interests'

Strassburg, 24.06.2010 - At the end of a debate on the handling of the H1N1 pandemic, the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) today endorsed the conclusions of its Health Committee, which were published on 4 June last.

According to the Assembly, the handling of the pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), EU health agencies and national governments led to a "waste of large sums of public money, and unjustified scares and fears about the health risks faced by the European public". The adopted text says there was "overwhelming evidence that the seriousness of the pandemic was vastly overrated by WHO", resulting in a distortion of public health priorities.

The parliamentarians identified, as did the rapporteur Paul Flynn (United Kingdom, SOC), "grave shortcomings" in the transparency of decision-making about the outbreak, generating concerns about the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on decisions taken. Plummeting confidence in such advice could prove "disastrous" in the case of a severe future pandemic, they said.

The WHO has been "highly defensive", the adopted text underlines, and unwilling to accept that a change in the definition of a pandemic was made, or to revise its prognosis of the Swine Flu outbreak. The WHO and European health institutions were not willing to publish the names and declarations of interest of the members of the WHO Emergency Committee and relevant European advisory bodies directly involved in recommendations concerning the pandemic.

The Assembly did set out a series of urgent recommendations for greater transparency and better governance in public health, as well as safeguards against what it called "undue influence by vested interests". It called for a public fund to support independent research, trials and expert advice, possibly financed by an obligatory contribution of the pharmaceutical industry. It also called on the media to avoid "sensationalism and scaremongering in the public health domain".

Newport West MP Paul Flynn said the World Health Organisation had “cried wolf” over the virus and was in danger of being ignored by the public in future.

In a report written for the Council of Europe and to be presented to it later in the week, Mr Flynn argues governments wasted huge sums of money on vaccines that were not needed.

Mass H1N1 immunisation 'inappropriate'

The mass vaccination program for swine flu has come under fire from an infectious disease expert who says the risk of serious side effects was greater than any potential benefit for half the Australian population.

Writing in the latest issue of Australian Prescriber, Professor Peter Collignon, director of the Infectious Diseases Unit and Microbiology Department at The Canberra Hospital, said the Government's response to the virus was "inappropriate", fuelled by fears about its spread that were out of proportion to the real threat posed by the disease.

"Overall, swine flu has been associated with fewer deaths than seasonal influenza and is of low virulence," he wrote.

Vitamin D better than vaccines at preventing flu, report claims

The risk of children suffering from flu can be halved if they take vitamin D, doctors in Japan have found. The finding has implications for flu epidemics since vitamin D, which is naturally produced by the human body when exposed to direct sunlight, has no significant side effects, costs little and can be several times more effective than anti-viral drugs or vaccine.

Only one in ten children, aged six to 15 years, taking the sunshine vitamin in a clinical trial came down with flu compared with one in five given a dummy tablet. Mitsuyoshi Urashima, the Japanese doctor who led the trial, told The Times that vitamin D was more effective than vaccines in preventing flu.

A new Canadian-led study has added to a simmering scientific dispute over flu-shot campaigns, concluding that immunizing nursing-home workers does nothing to cut the number of confirmed influenza cases among the homes' elderly residents.

Coming at the end of the largest flu-vaccination campaign in Canadian history, the review of previous studies calls for stepped-up research into alternative, lower-tech ways to combat the virus, such as improved hand washing.

"What troubled us is that [shots] had no effect on laboratory-confirmed influenza," said Dr. Roger Thomas of the University of Calgary, lead author of the paper published by the respected Cochrane Library.

Swine Flu - Case Report

A 56 year old male was referred to Auckland Hospital ICU on 1 July 2009 with total respiratory failure, for ECMO external oxygenation. The patient had contracted H1N1 Swine flu (confirmed by tests) while on holiday overseas, and had developed what is known as ‘white out’ pneumonia. This refers to x-rays showing no air space in the lungs.

After 20 days of life-sustaining ECMO treatment and other critical care, the patient, who was unconscious by induced coma, had not responded. The ICU team advised the family of the likely outcome and had prepared them for the possibility of the patient’s death.

Family members approached Centre for Advanced Medicine Limited (CAM) for advice on the clinical use of intravenous vitamin C for such cases.

At the family’s request, information was provided to ICU doctors including ISO 9001:2008 registered protocols, safety data, dosages and access to vials of IV vitamin C under CAM's license for wholesale medicines.

The ICU team agreed to administer intravenous vitamin C according to the family's wishes. This decision acknowledged the family's rights, in compliance with the New Zealand Health and Disability Act, 1997.

The patient received intravenous vitamin C starting on the evening of 21 July, continuing until 29 July. 25 grams was provided on the first day increasing over the first three days to 50 grams twice daily which was sustained for a further six days.

By 24 July x-rays indicated increasing lung function and ECMO external oxygenation was discontinued on 26 July. After several days of assisted ventilation and critical care for ongoing secondary conditions, the patient was able to commence his recovery and rehabilitation.

The patient was discharged from hospital on Friday 18 September, and is recovering at home on the farm.

The decision by the Auckland Hospital ICU team to administer adequate dosages of IV vitamin C, and their skillful coordination of ICU procedures, were responsible for the positive medical outcome.

Permission from the patient and his family has been sought by CAM to publish these details on its website and elsewhere in the interests of accuracy. This permission was willingly provided and CAM expresses its thanks, admiration and respect.

CAM welcomes opportunities to provide similar professional support for registered medical practitioners and their patients.

On November 24, 2009, Novartis officially opened its first, large-scale vaccine manufacturing facility in the U.S. Located in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The project is a collaborative effort between Novartis and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which contributed $457M for the design, construction, and licensing of the facility.

For its part in the deal, Novartis is required to provide two commercial-scale lots of "pre-pandemic" vaccine annually for a minimum of three years. In addition, the government has the right to exercise options to purchase influenza vaccine over the next 17 years. (1) Currently, 191 employees work at the plant but that will increase to 350 persons when fully operational, anticipated to be sometime in 2011. The Holly Springs facility will be able to roll out 150 million flu shots per year.

Even though its use has not been approved by U.S. regulators, the plant will be producing MF59 as early as December 2009.(2) MF59 is Novartis' proprietary and controversial adjuvant composed of squalene and a surfactant called Tween80, also known as polysorbate 80. Back in July, 2009, the department of HHS purchased over $343.8M of "oil-in-water" adjuvant from Norvartis.(3) It looks like the government may want to take delivery on its purchase some time soon.

Health officials across Canada are being asked to hold back a batch of swine flu vaccine that appears to be causing higher rates of severe allergic reactions.

The vaccine's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, is asking governments to stop using vaccine doses from one particular lot shipment issued in late October.

Bloomberg reports that Glaxo advised Canadian doctors to hold off on using a batch of the vaccine while the company probes reports of higher-than-expected occurrences of a side effect known as anaphylaxis.

The batch of 172,000 doses of Arepanrix was linked to more cases of acute allergic reactions, including swollen tongues, throats and respiratory distress, than is expected, spokeswoman Gwenan White said.

According to Manitoba health officials, severe allergic reactions from the batch in question was seen in one of 20,000, which is far higher than the typical rate of one in 100,000.

The mainstream media has gone nuts and remains in overdrive in whipping up a hysteria relating to swine flu and the need for H1N1 vaccinations. Some governments have been enlightened by the facts surrounding the H1N1 and will not buy it nor force their people to take the shots.

One of the very special facts is that it is a virus with an "odd mixture of genes" from viruses such as the bird flu virus and human influenza virus. It was never found in swine and such a virus could not have evolved or mutated in the swine biological system. 1. The CDC stopped testing for H1N1 sometime ago as its symptoms are close to a mild seasonal flu, but strangely lumps all cases of flu as H1N1!

This number is supposed to sound big and scary, motivating millions of people to go out and pay good money to be injected with untested, unproven H1N1 vaccines. (OMNS, November 1, 2009) 2009 may be the year of the vaccine show-down, the moment when enough of us start questioning all we're being told about vaccines. A survey published in the BMJ in August (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/339/aug25_2/b3391) reported that less than half of healthcare workers in Hong Kong were willing to accept "pre-pandemic" flu vaccination. And that was before a letter from the Health Protection Agency to 600 United Kingdom neurologists on July 29th warning them to be on the alert for an increase in cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome following the vaccination campaign.

If nurses and doctors start questioning vaccination for themselves, sooner or later we'll have to advise patients to make their own minds up. They seem to be doing so anyway. A poll by Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/08/26/think-greater-risk/ ) , often described as a right-wing channel, found that 51% thought taking the H1N1 vaccine carried a greater risk than not being vaccinated.

Yet both in the USA and the UK, this year's swine flu vaccine will be rolled out without adequate safety testing. What's going on? Two things: profits and power.

Just after 6 p.m. on a warm Friday evening in July, Dr. David Newman is only minutes into a 10-hour shift in the emergency room of New York City’s St. Luke’s Hospital, and already he has assumed responsibility for 11 patients. The young Italian tourist sitting on the bed in front of the doctor has meningitis, and through an interpreter, Newman tells him he almost certainly has the viral form of the disease, which will do nothing more than make him feel ill for a few days. There is a tiny chance, says Newman, that the illness is caused by a bacterium, which can be deadly, but he is almost positive that’s not what the tourist has. He says to his patient, “I can’t tell you with 100 percent certainty that you don’t have it, but if you do, you’ll begin to feel worse and you’ll need to come back.” The tourist, on learning that he might be infected with a potentially lethal disease, looks down at his feet and confesses that he is much more worried about another illness: swine flu. Newman smiles patiently. “It would be nice if you had swine flu,” he says. “Compared to bacterial meningitis, swine flu is safe.”

Late last spring, as headlines and airwaves warned of a possible pandemic, patients like Newman’s began clogging emergency rooms across the country, a sneezing, coughing, infectious tide of humanity more worried than truly sick, but whose mere presence in the emergency room has endangered the lives of others. “Studies show that when there is ER crowding, mortality goes up, because patients who need immediate attention don’t get it,” says Newman, the director of clinical research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the hospital, which is affiliated with Columbia University. In an average year the ER at St. Luke’s, a sprawling 1,076-bed hospital on 113th Street, takes in 110,000 patients, some 300 a day. At the height of the summer swine flu outbreak, that number doubled. The vast majority of panicky patients who came in the door at St. Luke’s and other emergency departments didn’t actually have the virus, and of those who did, most were not sick enough to need hospitalization. Even so, says Newman, when patients with even mild flu symptoms show up in the hospital, they vastly increase the spread of the virus, simply because they inevitably sneeze and cough in rooms that are jammed with other people.

It seems simple enough to understand. A well person contracts swine flu from a sick person, who, once sick, passes it along to another. In the case of H1N1 swine flu, most of the population is not familiar with the virus, thus it has the potential to readily spread from sick to well. Sick people are supposed to quarantine themselves to prevent transmission. Everyone else is supposed to get a vaccine. One small problem - what if the sick people aren't really the ones spreading the infection? At first glance that sounds preposterous. A second look may cause you to pause and ponder.

Take a journey back almost a hundred years to the last swine flu epidemic, a true killer infection that preyed on young people. An experiment was conducted, one that would not be allowed today. A hundred Navy personnel volunteered. None of them had demonstrated any signs of the flu in the year prior to the experiment. The goal was to prove the swine flu spread from sick to well. The sickest of the sick coughed and sneezed onto some of the volunteers. Others were directly exposed to the mucosal secretions and viral-laden droplets of these very sick people. Surprise - not one of the volunteers fell ill.

VIRUSGATE?

There appears to be the most complete analysis of H1N1 (NST, p44, June 7, 2009) and Dr Nancy Cox, Chief of the influenza division at the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says that the results of their study show the global need for a more systematic surveillance of influenza viruses in pigs. That suggestion may be only partially correct but it is of critical importance in view of their researcher’s findings that clearly confirm that that the H1N1 is a new virus which is a “mixture of mixtures”. We may need more than a systematic surveillance.

It is unlikely that such a virus had been “circulating undetected among swine herds somewhere in the world.” And it is unlikely that pigs were the source of the current human pandemic, not even a remote potential. They have not yet seen this new virus infecting swine. Let’s consider the facts about this new virus and relate it to mutation and evolutionary biology.

In the past few weeks I have received hundreds of inquiries about the recent outbreak of swine flu. My views on the subject may be controversial to some of you, but they may not come as a surprise to those who have read my books.

To answer one question many have posed, the Mexican toddler who visited Texas and died there actually suffered from a pre-existing respiratorypandemics2 condition (who knows when he received his vaccine shots, which kill many children). Or did he live in Mexico City? Mexico City has a high concentration of people (over 20 million), poverty, lousy sanitation and substandard health care, and the stagnant air pollution that overhangs the city is one of the worst in world. Nearly every person living in Mexico City has a weak respiratory system. I know firsthand what air pollution can do to you. In 1983, I spent one year in New Delhi (India), and suffered from upper respiratory problems the entire year. You never stop coughing up dark phlegm, day and night, when living in that kind of unhealthy environment. My lungs were filled with black soot produced at a rate of 2,000 tons per day by coal-burning electricity generators.

It wasn’t until I went to my local grocery store (name withheld) recently that I realized how low pharmaceutical companies would stoop to propagandize the public with lies. While I was at the checkout counter a young woman bagging my groceries looked at me, smiled, and said: “Have you had the flu shot yet.” I was stunned.

I looked at her and asked: “Is your store management instructing you to ask everyone this?” She said ‘no’ but employees were encouraged to ask customers if they were interested in receiving the shot. I looked at this young woman with pity in my eyes and said: “There’s no way I would put that poison into my body.”

JAPANESE health authorities are investigating a flu medicine that is also available in Australia after a teenager jumped 11 storeys to his death after taking the drug. It was the 18th juvenile fatality linked to Tamiflu in 17 months.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has asked the Japanese importer of Tamiflu, an anti-viral drug regarded as the most important shield against bird flu in humans, to collect information about the conditions of patients who take the drug.

Citizens of the world are becoming very concerned about the safety and the actual usefulness of vaccines. Some of the questions being asked are: 1. Do vaccines actually provide protection against disease? 2. Are vaccines safe for healthy people, never mind those who are already sick or frail? 3. Do vaccines unfavorably alter the immune system? 4. Are many of our degenerative diseases at least partially due to the ever growing number of vaccines? 5. It's the beginning of the influenza season, and despite the annual warnings from public health officials, I won't be getting a flu shot. Nor will I haul my doctor-phobic toddler into the pediatrician's office for one.

I know the flu virus can cause complications in vulnerable populations with chronic conditions, and we're both considered high risk. I'm pregnant, and for the first time this year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also suggests that healthy but germ-spreading children ages 2 through 5 receive flu shots.

Doctors in the UK are to be warned that the bird flu drug Tamiflu could be linked to psychiatric problems including suicidal behaviour, it emerged today.

In the next two to three months, Roche Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures the drug, will issue new information to doctors about more than 100 worldwide cases in which patients suffered mental health problems while taking it, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) said.

Federal health officials at a meeting Friday in Tacoma downplayed the risk bird flu poses to humans, contrasting earlier warnings from the federal government.

“There is no evidence it will be the next pandemic,” Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, said of avian flu. There is “no evidence it is evolving in a direction that is becoming more transmissible to people.”

Gerberding spoke at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center at a pandemic flu conference that drew 1,200 people from across the state, mostly health department officials and others involved in emergency planning.

Wednesday, February 22nd was Washington’s real birthday. In honor of General George Washington, who became the first President of our brand new liberated nation, I urge you to contact your local radio stations, as well as national radio station personalities, to let them know the danger that the USDA’s National Animal Identification System (NAIS) poses to our liberties. Let them know that you want them to address the issue of why is the government stealing away our rights with programs like NAIS, PAWS , REAL ID and the Patriot Act.

Are you familiar with NAIS? Let me give you a little background. The USDA wants to register the GPS coordinates, name, address, phone, and other data on every farm, home, and other location that has even has a single animal, with a government Premise ID. For this privilege of mandatory registration, you will pay a fee of $10 or more, per year. Next, they intend to tag every single one of your animals with a RFID, or other tag. This will be mandatory. In addition to paying an annual fee and paying for tags for all of your animals, you would also be required to log, track, and report all “events,” such as the birth of an animal, death of an animal, animals leaving, or entering your property. All reports must be made within 24 hours, or you could face stiff fines. Do not expect them to keep your private information secure. In a little “Oops,” the USDA just released the social security numbers of 350,000 farmers.

A new multi-billion dollar campaign has been launched in order to promote the sale of yet another vaccine, Roche's drug for treating influenza, Tamiflu. Multinationals such as the pharmaceutical, agricultural and biotech companies all stand to make huge profits over this new “fear and consumption” campaign. If these multinationals have their way, they'll convince us that only they have the answers to all of our problems (whether they're real or created).

With so much frenzy about avian flu in the news, I can’t help but wonder if avian flu would even exist without the cozy relationship between BigPharma and the media. Even with so much opposition to Direct-to-Consumer pharmaceutical ads, they still continue to flood our television sets. Because BigPharma has so much financial control over the media, it only stands to reason that the news will be biased in their favor. The situation has become so exaggerated that, now, many unsuspecting viewers don’t realize that most news stories are really just ingeniously designed ads. It should come as no surprise to you to realize that news stories about avian flu are just that – ads to promote Tamiflu.

The creation of infectious diseases that now threaten humans can be traced directly back to the way we treat animals... especially animals raised as food sources. The only long-term strategy we can adopt to prevent the death and suffering that accompany pandemics is to make permanent changes in the way we treat animals.

We must also take a look at the way we use antibiotics and how hospitals are breeding grounds for superbugs. We have to take a whole new look at what information we're giving people in terms of public health. Why are we limiting people to only two options here – a vaccine and an antiviral drug? Why aren't we educating people about all the antiviral herbs, foods and supplements that are more powerful than a drug, and that can't create a resistant form of the virus? The virus cannot build resistance if you're eating 30 different antiviral foods. Why has the public not been told this information?

Tamiflu was developed several years ago after lab tests showed it slowed the replication of viruses in the lab dish. Tests in humans showed it reduced the normal 5 to 7 day course of Flu by 1.5 to 2.5 days. It did not prevent, cure nor reduce the effects of Flu. At best it is a palliative or pain reliever to "treat the symptoms," but not cure the disease.

Most medical doctors mistakenly believe in the "anti-body" response of the immune system as the method by which the body fights viral infections. But not so. The body causes a fever above 101 degrees which stops the telemeres on the ends of the virus from allowing any viral replication.

The fever is the body's primary generalized immune system response to any viral infection. Any palliative treatment which reduces the fever of flu infections will prolong the infection and may lead to irreparable damage or death, mostly from the resulting viral pneumonia. But the pneumonia was caused by lowering the fever and allowing uncontrolled viral replication in the lungs. Most cold medications, including aspirin and Tamiflu are in this palliative class.

...."There is a simple way to tell whether the stories you are reading about avian flu are likely propaganda or legitimate. Apply this list of questions:

1. Who wrote it? 2. Who funded it? 3. Is it short on fact, long on interpretation and editorializing? 4. Does it cite sources for the statements made and the statistics mentioned? 5. Does it make scientific presumptions it does not back up? 6. Is the only solution to the problem presented a drug or a vaccine? 7. Is there an abundance of emotional trigger words throughout the report? 8. How many times is the word pandemic used? 9. Is there any suggestion that the avian flu threat might just fade out on its own? 10. Is there any mention of how the birds were actually tested? 11. Is there any mention of how the people were actually tested? 12. Is there any suggestion that perhaps germs are not the only cause of disease? 13. Does the article pretend like H5N1 is a proven cause of avian flu? 14. Does the report assume that germs are the only possible cause of disease?
That should do it. At least consider the possibility that there is a subtext here, and that it's a pattern we have seen before: invent a disease, hype the extent of the threat, create a drug or vaccine, spend the money, threat disappears."....

As we wait for this year's influenza epidemic, keep in mind we are also waiting for the big one, the pandemic (pan: all, demic: people). A severe pandemic will kill many more Americans than died in the World Trade Centers, the Iraq war, the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina combined. Perhaps a million or two in the USA alone. Such a disaster would tear the fabric of our society. Our entire country would resemble New Orleans after Katrina.
Also, it's only a question of when it will come, not if it will come. Pandemics come every 25 years or so, severe ones every hundred years or so. The last pandemic, the Hong Kong flu, occurred in 1968, killing 34,000 Americans. In 1918, the Spanish flu killed more than 500,000 Americans. So many millions died in other countries, they couldn't bury the bodies.

Often the flu pandemic of 1918 which is said to have killed 18 million worldwide, is cited as an example of what 'might' lie in store for us.

A 50-year-old asthmatic patient who came to my office recently asked for Tamiflu as a protection against bird flu.
"Bird flu may get us all this year," he wheezed anxiously.
"There is no bird flu here," I said.

The greatest problem among my patients right now isn't bird flu; it is fear of bird flu. The greatest risk of an epidemic is of a fear epidemic.

The hyperventilating has reached well beyond my practice. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been deluged with phone calls and questions. Among them: "Is it safe to keep a bird feeder in the yard?" The answer: Yes!

Bird flu scares us because it is a mindless microbe that has choked off the breathing of millions of birds. But a species barrier protects us from this virus unless there are several more mutations to the viral DNA.

So why are people scared out of proportion to the risk, which is currently close to zero for anyone except bird handlers?
