Newborn dies after vaccine shot; mourning family protests at clinic

Several family members, including his mother Le Thi Thuy, took him there, and waited an hour after the injection to take him home.

But soon after they returned home, he had difficulty breathing and cried a lot. His family brought him back to the station that noon for a check. As the boy did not stop crying, they brought him to a district hospital half an hour later. Officials from Thanh Hoa’s Preventive Health Department has sealed the bottle of vaccine given to the boy for investigation. Vaccination deaths among babies have made headlines regularly in Vietnam in recent years. In most of the cases, the babies were believed to have had health issues beforehand. A court in Quang Tri Province in central Vietnam last March sentenced two doctors and a nurse to jail for mistaking Hep-B vaccine with a muscle relaxant. They gave the shots to three newborns, causing their deaths in 2013.
