WASHINGTON, March 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- SafeMinds -- America's leading scientific organization that investigates the risks mercury-containing medical products pose to our children -- applauds the decision by Bush administration officials to take a more proactive approach to avoiding mercury poisoning. "Exposure to mercury poses a serious health risk, especially to our children," stated Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, NP, president of SafeMinds. "We are pleased that government officials are responding to some of the health threats caused by contact with mercury. Our hope is that the administration will use this momentum to mobilize resources against all mercury-related health threats, especially those from mercury-containing children's vaccines."

According to an article by Jennifer Lee in yesterday's New York Times, EPA scientists believe that, "...of some four million babies born a year, 630,000 -- double the previous estimate -- might have been unsafe levels of mercury. In January, a committee of doctors advising the children's health office of the agency sent a letter to (EPA administrator) Leavitt raising concern that the proposed rules did not provide enough protection for children." ("EPA May Tighten Its Proposal on Mercury") In response, Redwood said, "If the Bush administration believes -- rightly so -- that mercury emissions from power plants are a grave threat to our children's health, then they cannot ignore the much greater threat constituted by the concentrated amounts of mercury directly injected into our children as part of their vaccines.

"The only 100 percent 'safe' level of mercury that can be introduced into our children's systems without the risk of injury is zero," continued Redwood. "To seek anything less than a complete ban on the use of mercury in medical products, especially in our children's vaccines, is to gamble with the lives that these treatments seek to protect."

Scientific research, available through SafeMinds, has concluded that mercury-containing medical products have been linked to neurodevelopment damage in children, such as ADD/ADHD and autism. "Until a ban of mercury from medical products is enacted, parents should be extra vigilant to avoid having vaccines containing mercury (Thimerosal) administered to their children," concluded Redwood.
