Bitter Pill for David Healy: academia under pharma influence
Source: Alliance for Human Research Protection
May 21, 2002

One wonders how many embarrassing causes celebres are needed before academic institutions take back control of the university from the corrosive influence of the pharmaceutical/ biotech industry?

In 2000, Dr. David Healy may have been surprised by the extent to which the independence of the university has been compromised. But even winning his case after having tackled a pack of industry contracted bloodhounds does nothing to restore anyone's trust in the integrity of academia. As long as doctors and bioethicists at the university are for hire by industry, the process is necessarily corrupted because they become promoters of medical products and procedures that have a commercial value for that industry.

Prozac: The Eli Lilly Suicides

THE LILLY SUICIDES
A peculiar and toubling case
by Richard DeGrandpre

THE WITNESS

In the final days of the 20th century, a North Wales psychiatrist named David Healy conducted a curious study, and with more than a curious result. Twenty volunteers with no history of psychiatric problems were recruited, half of whom were given the drug Zoloft, an antidepressant from the Prozac family of drugs known as the SSRIs, or "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors." The other half were given an antidepressant that, unlike Zoloft and Prozac, does not selectively target the brain chemical serotonin. Each group took their respective drug for two weeks and then, shortly thereafter, switched to the other.

Autism and ADHD Linked to Addictive Food Additive
24 gen 04

New research shows that a common food additive in restaurant and processed food can cause abnormal fetal development, causing ADHD and Autism in children.

For the last fifty years, the medical community has been baffled by the rise in cases of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Autism. These two diseases, unheard of before 1950, have been striking an increasing number of children. Physicians have been unable to explain to parents why their children are suffering these maladies despite there not being any family history of the disorder.

'The Sinister Sacking of the World's Leading GM Expert - and the trail that leads to Tony Blair and the White House'
by Andrew Rowell (Daily Mail 7/7/03 - extracts)

'Early one fine summer morning, a taxi pulled up outside a terrace house in Aberdeen and took a 68 year old scientist to a TV studio.  Shortly afterwards, Dr. Arpad Pusztai found himself propelled from a life of welcome obscurity to the centre of a political maelstrom that would cost him his job, his reputation and his health.'

'His crime was to question the safety of genetically modified food.  His 2 1/2 minute interview on ITV's World in Action revealed his research suggesting rats fed on GM potatoes suffered stunted growth and damage to their immune system.'

Autism: new risk in NHS vaccine

FRASER NELSON POLITICAL EDITOR
Source: Scotsman.com News

INFANTS injected with the whooping cough vaccine routinely used by the NHS are six times more likely to contract autism than those given the version used in the United States, according to new research.

A report shown to an investigation by the US Institute of Medicine (IoM) has linked autism to baby vaccines which contain thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative. The UK is believed to be the last developed country not to have withdrawn it from baby vaccines.

Nutrient during pregnancy 'super-charges' brain
13:05 12 March 04 http://www.NewScientist.com news service

Taking a nutrient called choline during pregnancy could "super-charge" children's brains for life, suggests a study in rats.

Offspring born to pregnant rats given the supplement were known to be faster learners with better memories. But the new work, by Scott Swartzwelder and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, US, shows this is due to having bigger brain cells in vital areas.

Choline, a member of the vitamin B family, is found in egg yolks, liver and other meats - "exactly the kind of things people were told not to eat" due to their high cholesterol content, says Swartzwelder.

Conscience vote rejects flouridation
Mar 8 2004

Cynthia Tipples, The Western Mail

THE Welsh Liberal Democrats decided to oppose the fluoridation of water - although they allowed their elected representatives to vote on the issue according to their conscience.

Recent legislation has given the National Assembly the power to decide whether domestic water supplies should be fluoridated.

Kirsty Williams, the party's spokesperson on health at the Assembly, argued that it made sense to add fluoride to water.

Vitamins may help mentally ill

Vitamins may help mentally ill
Leanne Edmistone, health reporter
12 mar 04 - Soure: The Courier Mail

VITAMIN and mineral supplements will be used in a Gold Coast medical trial targeting chemical imbalances in people with a mental illness and children with severe behavioural problems.

The trial, involving 18 patients with schizophrenia, is based on the unorthodox work of American doctor Bill Walsh.

Dr Walsh, who is visiting the Coast and has been researching chemical balances since 1976, said the treatment would be used in conjunction with traditional medications and counselling, and was not intended to replace them.

Louise McLean of Zeus Information service did an excellent interview with Martin Walker, the author of "Dirty Medicine - Science, Big Business and the Assault on Natural Health Care", a book that started to turn the tide on the medical and pharmaceutical Cartel's business with disease.

Walker discusses the 'Quackwatchers' or 'Quackbusters' as part of a larger, concerted attack on natural healing practices. The useless practice of vivisection - animal experimentation is one of big pharma's trump cards. Calming rethoric on chemical pollution and delay tactics of the chem multinationals on adverse effects of their poisons are discussed and a new tack on pharmaceutical company lobbying is revealed as well.

The author tells us about recent and current editorial projects and about the publishing house he had to establish to get his books into print and distributed. We can learn much from a campaigner who was part of the generation of '68 and whose life was very much influenced by the fact that those student protests got him expelled from college...
