The Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that it is making changes in the way it operates to prevent the kind of drug safety controversies that have dogged the agency in recent years.

Officials outlined plans to better monitor safety problems after drugs are approved and to make internal changes to increase the profile of agency scientists who raise red flags about drugs. The steps were announced in response to a report last year by the congressionally chartered Institute of Medicine (IOM) that called for an overhaul of the FDA's culture and structure following safety controversies over drugs such as the painkiller Vioxx.

The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service says in their Jan 30, 2007 letter:

VITAMINS FIGHT DISEASE: Nutrients Effective but Overlooked

Vitamin supplementation fights disease. Although medical research has repeatedly shown this, such has not always been the case in the news media. Recently, however, the popular press is picking up more of the good news: Nutritional therapy is cheaper, safer, and often more effective than pharmaceutical drugs.

NIACIN FIGHTS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

The New York Times just reported (1) that inexpensive vitamin B-3, niacin, "can increase HDL as much as 35 percent when taken in high doses, usually about 2,000 milligrams per day. It also lowers LDL . . . (and) triglycerides as much as 50 percent." The Times quoted Steven E. Nissen, M.D., president of the American College of Cardiology, as saying: "Niacin is really it. Nothing else available is that effective."

Niacin was first used to successfully lower serum cholesterol in 1955. (2) Since then, placebo-controlled studies have confirmed that niacin prevents second heart attacks, and niacin also reduced strokes. One study showed that after 15 years, men taking niacin had an 11 percent lower death rate. Although a warm "flush" is a common side effect of niacin, the vitamin is safer than any drug.

VITAMIN D PREVENTS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, CANCER

The Associated Press reports (3) that "An abundance of vitamin D seems to help prevent multiple sclerosis, according to a study in more than 7 million people that offers some of the strongest evidence yet of the power of the 'sunshine vitamin' against MS."

Multiple sclerosis is known to be more common among those persons living in northern latitudes. But, says Harvard School of Public Health's Dr. Alberto Ascherio, "This is the first large prospective study where blood levels are measured . . . (providing) much stronger evidence." (4,5)

AP adds that "Other studies have linked high levels of vitamin D in the blood to lower risks of a variety of cancers."

VITAMIN E EXTENDS LIFESPAN

People who have vitamin E in their bodies live longer, according to a 19-year study of 29,092 men. National Cancer Institute researchers concluded that "Higher circulating concentrations of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) within the normal range are associated with significantly lower total and cause-specific mortality in older male smokers." (6) Vitamin E was found to reduce death from all causes, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

VITAMIN C PREVENTS STOMACH CANCER

"(O)ne of the largest prospective analyses of the association of plasma and dietary vitamin C levels with gastric cancer risk ever performed on Western European populations" (7) indicates that having more vitamin C in your blood plasma reduces your risk of stomach cancer.

VITAMIN SAFETY

And best of all, vitamins are safe. There is not even one death per year from vitamin supplementation. American Journal of Emergency Medicine, Vol. 22, No. 5, September 2004 (PDF)

Nutritional Medicine is also known as Orthomolecular Medicine

Linus Pauling defined orthomolecular medicine as "the treatment of disease by the provision of the optimum molecular environment, especially the optimum concentrations of substances normally present in the human body." Orthomolecular medicine uses safe, effective nutritional therapy to fight illness. For more information: http://www.orthomolecular.org

Mental health screening of all children is the goal of legislation introduced into many state legislatures this year. Typical of these highly controversial bills is the Missouri bill that would require every Missouri school district, in collaboration with "the office of comprehensive child mental health," to develop "a policy of incorporating social and emotional development into the district's educational program."

The Missouri bill requires schools to "address teaching and assessing social and emotional skills and protocols for responding to children with social, emotional or mental health problems." The bill also requires the Missouri state board of education to set "social and emotional development standards."

Grant will be used for mental health screenings

The Partnership for Results in Cayuga County has received a $147,545 grant from the state Health Foundation for its Resilience Project.

The Resilience Project will screen all children in kindergarten through grade three in four rural districts for developing mental health and behavior problems, according to a news release issued by the foundation. With parental permission, trained staff provide skill development sessions for up to 13 weeks.

Learn all about Monsanto's latest shenanigangs, from patenting whole species of life forms, creating GMO crops that pose hazards to human health, threatening farmers with lawsuits if one of their patented gene sequences makes it into their crops, and much, much more. Monsanto is a truly evil company that has brought us everything from Agent Orange to DDT to Aspartame, and now they want control of all the vegetables on your kitchen table.

Michael Bending of the Australian Health Freedom Alliance alerts both Australians and New Zealanders that relative freedom to obtain nutrient supplements is on its way out down under. The project of a TransTasman Joint Health Agency, meant to extend the rather restrictive Australian system to its smaller neighbour and thereby close a loophole through which Australians are able to obtain certain healthy products that are formally prohibited in their country, is making its way through the New Zealand legislature. Here is Michael's warning and alert:

The NZ Government is trying to change the way in which all Natural Health Products (NHPs) are regulated. They plan to treat Natural Health Products as drugs and give the power to control them to the controversial Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Needless to say, the NZ natural health industry has never had an adverse or negative report with regards to a natural health product. The risks connected with nutritional health products are negligible.

So why is the Australian TGA and the NZ Labour Party trying to make New Zealanders more safe than safe? The answer is obviously more money and a protected market for the big drug companies.

The New Zealand Government has called for submissions with regards to the Therapeutic Products and Medicines Bill 2006. This bill seeks to eventually pave the way for the Joint Trans Tasman Treaty (JTA) in which the Australian TGA will set itself up as the regulatory body for both NZ and Aust.

The NZ Labour Party are hoping that they will hear only glowing submissions rather than adverse views, in this regard the NZ Labour party can use the favourable submissions from all the big health businesses and drug companies to push their agenda in the NZ Parliament.

It does not matter if you are a NZ resident or an Australian resident, you can still make a submission to the NZ Government Administration Committee. If you are Australian tell them what life is like under the restrictive TGA banner.

We know that this JTA carries a legal frame work that obligates Australia and NZ to conform to international treaties, this in effect obliges us to harmonise to any Codex standards in the future. On a global basis, Codex seeks to make many natural health products illegal or reclassified as drugs, as well as reducing allowable dosages. For more Codex info: http://www.ahf-au.org/

We know that the Australian regulatory system is so top heavy that it favours the bigger companies, as only the bigger companies can afford the red tape and regulatory procedures required to market a natural health product.

In Australia we know that we can source from NZ many health products that are illegal in Australia - why are they illegal in Australia? If NZ goes ahead with the JTA then these products will no doubt be illegal in NZ too, is this the sort of health industry NZ wants and needs? Australia doesn't need it either but unfortunately we already have it by virtue of political manoeuvring by the drug companies and Government in the 1980's.

It doesn't matter if you are a business or and individual, NZ'nder or Australian, please make a submission to the NZ Government Administration Committee and tell them that we do not what the JTA and we do not want the Therapeutic Products and Medicines Bill. Dec 2006 passed in the NZ Parliament.

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday, 7 February 2007. Please make a concerted effort and send your submission. For more Information on your submission, David Sloan from the NZ Health Trust has a web page outlining the procedures.

Thimerosal Definite Cause Of Autism

To what degree of scientific certainty can we prove that current epidemic of autism was caused by the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal, in childhood vaccines?

In response to this question, David Ayoub, MD, told Independent Media TV, ''I can state that the certainty of the science supporting mercury as a major cause of autism is probably more overpowering than the science behind any other disease process that I studied dating back to medical school.''

FOR SALE: CBS Evening News?

Remember the forged documents reported as “news” by Dan Rather at CBS Evening News just prior to the last Presidential election? Rather was out the door sometime thereafter.

The names and faces may have changed but the making up the news as they go remains the same at CBS Evening News.

Several attack pieces on dietary supplements were launched in the guise of “news” during the course of last week’s CBS Evening News broadcasts.

(NewsTarget) A proposition before the California state legislature that would make a new vaccine mandatory for girls, is raising questions of parents’ rights.

The bill (AB 16), introduced by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, D-Mountain View, would make inoculation with Guardasil, the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, mandatory for all girls 11 years of age and older in California.

HB 202: Ritalin bill passes House

| | Comments (0)

The Salt Lake Tribune
January 24, 2007
By Nicole Stricker

The "Ritalin bill" barring schools from pushing psychiatric medications passed the House floor Wednesday.

The bill prevents teachers from requiring parents to medicate their kids. Sponsor Michael Morley, R-Spanish Fork, said this year's version addresses concerns that triggered two past vetoes.

Several parent and physician groups fear chilled communication between teachers and parents. Supporters say diagnoses should come only from medical professionals. The bill passed 51-23.

What's next: Moves to a Senate committee.
